Disney has released the new trailer for their latest live-action adaptation of one of their animated classics, “Cruella.” Starring Emma Stone as the title character, which means to be more of an alias than anything else. Set in 70s London, the film explores Estella’s early days as a young grifter looking to make ends meet but manages to become the talk of the town when she catches the attention of legendary fashion patron Baroness von Hellman. But Estella comes to find out that the world of fashion is more cutthroat than she expected, and if she intends to make it out on top, she will have to become Cruella.
The trailer does plenty of teasing when it comes to the clever and creative hijinks Estella pulls as Cruella. It appears that Estella’s talents aren’t up to the legendary fashion legend Baroness von Hellman’s (Emma Thompson) standards, and the only way to get her attention is to do something so bold and daring as Cruella. Of course, things escalate, and with Estella’s penchant for mischief, she hatches all sorts of schemes to get back at Baroness, including stealing some of the fashion icon’s most prized possessions, dalmatians.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for “Cruella:”
Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
Disney’s “Cruella” is directed by Craig Gillespie (“I Tonya”) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, with a story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis. It was produced by Andrew Gunn (“Freaky Friday”), Marc Platt (“Mary Poppins Returns”) and Kristin Burr (“Christopher Robin”), with Emma Stone, Michelle Wright, Jared LeBoff and Glenn Close serving as executive producers. Two-time Oscar®- winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “A Room with a View”) creates dazzling and imaginative costumes, which take on a life of their own.
“Cruella” opens in theaters and on Disney+’s premiere access on May 28, 2021.
