Netflix’s “My Dad: The Bounty Hunter” promises to be an epic family-friendly action-adventure comedy. Inspired by the likes of some of the gritty sci-fiers that came before it, the animated series follows Lisa (Priah Ferguson) and Sean (Jecobi Swain), who adore their dad, Terry (Laz Alonso), even though he cannot really show it. But this dad isn’t aloof, he’s a hard-working father who tries his best to provide for his family. And what first started out as a stowaway adventure to get to know their father turns out to be a revelation that their father is actually the galaxy’s toughest bounty hunter.
Now Netflix has released the first three minutes of “My Dad: The Bounty Hunter,” which gives us a small tease of the animation and the narrative tone. There’s that mix of physical comedy but also a sense of suspense and danger, along with some fun action to boot. And while it may not be like any other bounty hunting show, the fact that it centers on a Black father connecting with his kids speaks to those who can relate to those dynamics.
Let’s just say that Terry won’t have to worry about keeping his kids active as they will be joining him on his bounty hunting adventures. It certainly gives new meaning to the idea of family bonding time.
