I admit it, I recently watched Mary Poppins for the first time ever! Mary Poppins was originally released in 1964. It is a fairy tale of a magical Nanny who drifts into London via umbrella to help save the Banks family. The tunes are extremely catchy and the cast are adorable. The film is now playing at the El Captain Theatre in Hollywood as a sing-a-long. Seeing the classic musical here is a delight but seeing it as a sing-a-long is a real treat! Now through January 20th, movie-goers can sway, sing and recite lines as they interact with the on screen actors!
My daughter was giddy to attend opening night with me. Sing-a-longs are perfect for families as your kids can sing their hearts out and no one will care! The words appear at the bottom of the screen as well as prompts (applaud, sway). How is it that even without seeing the movie that I knew ALL of the songs! I even new a good portion of the words.
Every show begins with a performance from house organist Rob Richards. Opening night featured a costume contest as well as a a special appearance by Richard Sherman. Richard, along with his brother, wrote the music and lyrics for Mary Poppins. He enchanted us with a medley of tunes from the movie as well as stories about songs that weren’t as successful He also mentioned working with Mary. P Travers the creator of Mary Poppins. The highlight for me is when he sang the chorus for “It’s a Small World” from my favorite Disney ride! This night was a special one for Richard Sherman. The El Capitan Theatre dressing room at The El Capitan Theatre was dedicated to the Sherman Brothers. Richard Sherman was surprised with a dedication ceremony which included his family and friends of the Sherman Brothers Star Dressing Room.
Thank you to El Capitan Theatre and Disney for inviting my daughter and I to experience this fun moment! I highly recommend seeing the movie here. Make sure to stop by the lower level of the theater to view rarely seen stills from the Disney Archives!
It is amazing that after 50 years this film is still adored by many. You can now celebrate the magic with The Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary EditionBlu-ray Combo Pack!
