HBO’s His Dark Materials will see Asriel (James McAvoy) and Lyra (Dafne Keen) venturing into a brand-new world. During today’s exciting Comic-Con@Home panel for HBO and BBC’s drama series, fans were treated to the first official trailer for the upcoming second season.
Based on Philip Pullman’s YA fantasy novels of the same name, season 2 of His Dark Materials will adapt The Subtle Knife, the second book of the acclaimed trilogy. In it, Lyra continues to investigate the mysterious Dust phenomenon and searches for her father, Asriel. On her journey, she is accompanied by Will (Amir Wilson) as they explore the new worlds to which they have both been introduced, while also trying to outrun Mrs. Coulter, who is determined to bring her home by any means necessary.
The new season also sees the addition of new characters. Andrew Scott joins the cast as John Perry, who, like Lyra and Asriel, has his own daemon, a physical manifestation of a person’s “inner-self” that takes the form of an animal. And as an added surprise, his daemon will be voiced by Fleabag creator and co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Other new cast members include Jade Anouka, who will play Ruta Skadi, and Simone Kirby, who will play Dr. Mary Malone. Other returning cast includes Ariyon Bakare, who plays the villainous Lord Boreal, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who plays the Texan aeronaut Lee Scoresby.
