Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Gladiator II. The long awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s Academy Award winning film is a direct follow up to the original, which starred Russell Crowe as a Roman general who is betrayed when the ambitious son of an Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father, seizes the throne, and reduced him to a gladiator. The sequel, set some 30 odd years after the events of the first Gladiator film, sees Lucius (Paul Mescal), the former heir to the Roman Empire, who becomes a gladiator after his home is invaded by the Roman army, led by general Marcus Acacius, during the reign of co-emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joesph Quinn).
As the trailer teases, epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome continues on. There will also be plenty of betrayal, especially for Lucius who has been seemingly disowned by his family, including Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla, the mother of Lucius. She associates with Acacius and watches Lucius fight in the arena, but does not recognize him as her son. Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal), a Roman general who trained under Maximus. Denzel Washington who plays Macrinus, a cruel power broker who keeps a stable of gladiators who doubles as an arms dealer and provides food and oil to the armies in Europe, seems to have an agenda of his own as he plans to use Lucius as an instrument.
Lucius will have to face off against deadly adversaries wielding an assortment of weapons that could kill in an instant and a deadly CG rhino. Of course, survival is going to be a major plot, but the future of the Roman Empire is at stake as well.
Lior Raz and Derek Jacobi also star.
“Gladiator II” opens in theaters on November 22, 2024.
