Fans of Marvel Studios tuned in every Friday to catch a new episode of WandaVision. Some have criticized that the period sitcom format combined with the intriguing mystery is too unconventional for the Marvel formula. I’d argue that it is the best thing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, since it needed something new and refreshing. And Marvel Studio’s first long-form cinematic series fits that criteria, especially since episode 4 has shown us that the show is returning to its old roots by unraveling that mystery.
Marvel has released a brand-new trailer to tease the remainder of the season. In it, SWORD is trying to understand the nature of this sitcom world’s reality that Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) has created. But they aren’t alone. The FBI, led by Jimmy Woo (Randall Park), who has improved his magic skills since we last saw him in Ant-Man and the Wasp, is observing everything that is going on in this world. And they are just like us, members of an audience, carefully watching out for any changes that might occur. And as it turns out, each new episode they see happens at a different time period.
There is confirmation that Monica will be providing first-person intel on the Westview anomaly. Woo questions if what they are seeing is an alternate reality or a time travel event. Darcy (Kat Dennings) quips a working theory that it is a sitcom.
But that wasn’t the only discovery. As it turns out, the citizens of Westview are all missing persons. Well, all but one. As an agent posts profiles of these missings persons on the wall, the one person we don’t see is Agnes (Kathryn Hahn). That can’t be just a small coincidence. Of course, this supports the fan favorite theory that Agnes is Agatha Harkness, an all-powerful witch who is a significant figure in the Marvel Community and mentor to Wanda, in the comics.
And the biggest shocker of all is that we saw a dead Vision (Paul Bettany), with his forehead caved in, his Mind Stone missing from when Thanos took it out in “Avengers: Infinity War,” and skin grey. But is that the remnants of a Vision staying alive in Wanda’s mind, or is he a part of the fantasy that Wanda has created. This trailer hints that it could be the former, considering that it shows a small clip of Vision walking before the barrier that separates the sitcom world from the real world, with his VO asking, “what is outside of Westview?”
The trailer then shows a series of quick snippets of SWORD desperately trying to break the barrier or themselves looking at it in astonishment. Followed by a huge confrontation of Wanda and Vision in the sitcom world floating above the ground and preparing to fight each other. “It’s probably the cast of the Mondays? Am I right” asks sitcom Wanda.
After three episodes, Marvel Studios shows that they can still be themselves even when they are doing something as experimental as “Wandavision.” Check in again next Friday for a brand new episode of “WandaVision.”
