There was some history being made during the announcements for the 93rd Academy Awards. However, last year’s pandemic forced the Academy to make a few accommodations for films that missed their release window. First, they extended the eligibly by a few months. They also considered streaming and VOD films to be available for nominations. Lastly, they delayed the ceremony by pushing the event from its usual February date to April.
So, after months of tweaking the rules and watching films from home, we know who will be competing for the top prize. David Fincher’s “Mank” will be competing for 10 nominations, with ‘Minari,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Nomadland” not too far behind with six nominations. “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Promising Young Woman” both earned five nominations, while “One Night in Miami” was nominated for three.
Looking at the list below, aside from the few snubs, this is what diversity and representation should look like in all of the categories for every Academy Awards ceremony moving forward.
For the first time, two Asian directors are nominated for Best Director in the same year. That goes out to Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) and Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”). It was also the first time that two women are nominated in the same year. One for Zhao and the other for Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”). They will compete against Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”) and David Fincher (“Mank”).
Another great moment in history for today’s nominations is that two Asian-descent actors are nominated in the same year. That honor goes to Riz Amhed (“Sound of Metal) and Steve Yuen (“Minari).
Additionally, three Black men Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami”), Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), are nominated for Best Supporting Actor. There is a bit of perplexment regarding Stanfield’s nomination as Warner Bros. had campaigned him for the lead.
However, the late Chadwick Boseman earned his first nomination for his performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Also, Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) and Andra Day (“The United States v. Billie Holiday”) are nominated for Best Actress. It’s Day’s first and Davis’ fourth – this makes her the most nominated Black actress in history and the only Black actress with two Best Actress award nominations.
But one of the biggest snubs has to go to Delroy Lindo, whose solid performance in Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” was worth a nomination. Additionally, “One Night in Miami” got snubbed from Best Director (Regina King) and Best Picture.
Oscar nomination snubs come with the territory. Overall, there is a lot to celebrate as this is one of the most diverse Oscars in history.
