Halloween kicks off the holiday season with cooler temps, spooky decorations, lively costumes and family-activities. Juicy Juice asked That’s It LA what we like to do to celebrate Halloween and one of our traditions is to plan a family-tv night. We make popcorn, grab juices or hot cocoa and select a not-so-spooky movie to get us in the Halloween spirit.
We love stop-motion films and many are a good fit for this time of year. If you are a fan of this medium or new to this method works of clay, add these movies to your rental/stream queue.
5 Favorite Stop Motion Films
A Nightmare Before Christmas – this wonderful film has turned into a Halloween classic! Jack Skellington- the charming Pumpkin King, becomes bored with his annual scare on humans until he meets and kidnaps Santa Claus. Jack quickly learns that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side…
Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit – This duo has been a personal favorite with their lovable antics and wacky home-inventions. This is their Hollywood debut which has them starting a pest control company and their first client is Lady Tottington. She has a pesky problem- an over-sized rabbit who is destroying her crops! Mild thrills for a G rated audience!
Frankenweenie – Tim Burton’s sweet story about a boy and his dog is mixed with the classic tale of Frankenstein. Victor is an outcast at school and takes comfort from his best pal, Sparky. Tragedy hits and Victor loses Sparky. He is inspired to bring Sparky back to life after he hears an idea from one of his professors. He’s successful but things get crazy when his classmates get a wind of his experimentation. Frankenweenie may be emotional for young children who have experienced the loss of a dog but it’s truly a lovely adventure.
ParaNorman– Your average boy has a big task- stop a witch’s curse on the town. No worries, this isn’t the Walking Dead, but zombies do climb out graves. LAIKA Entertainment has perfected merging CGI and claymation mediums to produce fabulously, unique characters with a dark environment and the right amount of scare!
Corpse Bride– Victor and Victoria are getting married but Victor has some doubt. I wonder why? It’s an arranged marriage! While contemplating his new marriage, he gets sucked into the underworld during a walk through a forest. Emily, a ghost, was murdered before she married her true love and now wants to marry Victor. Does Victor find his way back to the real world?? Deep down Corpse Bride isn’t a horror film but a clever love story.
Coraline– Another LAIKA film but this might be best suited for tweens. Coraline moves into a new house with eclectic neighbors and a doorway that takes her to another realm. At first, this new world seems better than her real life until her Other Mother wants to trap her there! Creepy!!
Did I miss a stop-motion film? Let me know and I’ll add it to the list.
