The 93 Academy Awards may be the first of the awards ceremony to be held in person during a pandemic, but with the vaccine rollout underway and numbers plateauing, it is a sign that things are moving back to a new normal, or back to the old one whichever you prefer. But the show would be remised if it didn’t address themes of equity and injustice and how we as a people need to do better to end the systemic racism that afflicts our country.
If anything, the nominated films and winners are a celebration of the welcomed distraction during the pandemic and the recognition of diversity that make up the world we live in now. And just like last year, this year’s Oscars made history with Chloe Zhao being the first Asian woman of color to win the Academy Award for Best Directing.
It was also not without its fun moments from Youn Yuh-jung winning Best Supporting Actress and flirting with her “Minari” executive producer Brad Pitt. And the show was also full of surprises and upsets as well. One of the biggest surprises went to Daniel Kaluuya, who took home the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in “Judas and The Black Messiah.” But perhaps the biggest upset was Anthony Hopkins winning Best Actor for his performance in “The Father,” over Chadwick Boseman’s performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
