To say that the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards are unlike any other would be an understatement. The ceremony, which honors the best of the year in television, was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who emceed to a mostly empty stage. Though the ceremony lacked all the glitz and glamour that usually comes with these awards shows, there was still a lot to celebrate.
Schitt’s Creek did an unprecedent sweep of the entire comedy category by taking home seven awards including Outstanding Comedy with Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, and Annie Murphy taking home the acting awards, and Daniel Levy winning writing and directing.
Meanwhile, HBO’s Watchmen won the Emmy for Outstanding limited series with Regina King and Yahya Abdul-Mateen IItaking home their respective awards for their performances in the show, Damon Lindelof and Cord Jefferson winning for their writing.
Though there were a few surprises like Billy Crudup winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in The Morning Show, and Julia Garner taking home the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Seriestrophy, it was clear that Schitt’s Creek and HBO were the big winners.
And though this year’s Emmy’s lacked all the panache of previous ceremonies, one thing was clear. All nominees and presenters wanted their audience to know about voting in this year’s elections, why Black Lives Matter, and the importance of remembering historical events like Tulsa, OK, 1921.
The list of winners are in bold.
