When I think of famous fictional bears, Winnie the Pooh is on the top of my favorites list. He has memorable qualities and his love for honey is unparalleled (who loves honey more than him?). He has a group of loyal friends and no two are alike (they might remind us of one or two of our own friends). Plus Winnie looks good in red!
Created by A.A. Milne, the original Pooh Bear looks quite different from the animated Disney bear we have grown to love. The original vintage bear appeared in 1924 in a children’s book, then finally appeared in 1926 in a collection of Winnie-the-Pooh stories. Pooh Bear is based on a stuffed bear owned by Milne’s son Christopher Robin. Gifted by his mother, Christopher named his bear Winnie after a real bear he met at the London zoo. The upcoming film, “Goodbye to Christopher Robin”, shares the beginnings of Milne’s Pooh Bear journey and how the success of his stories affected his family. Read our review here on the film.
Pooh and his friends are a cast of characters who portray friendship, acceptance of differences and the fleeting days of childhood. One of my most memorable gifts from my husband (then boyfriend) was a large stuffed Winnie the Pooh. Before we were married and living together, he would read Winnie the Pooh stories from a collection to me over the phone (Ah, young love) when we couldn’t be together. I often think back fondly to this time of my life.
“We didn’t realize we were making memories. We just knew we were having fun.” – Pooh
Since then, the book, as well as the plush, have been passed down to our daughter.
Because of these moments, Pooh has a special place in my heart and throughout the years I’ve turned to Pooh and his friends for their advice and wisdom. The characters may seem simple but their words are essential to live by especially when you need a little encouragement. Here are some of my favorite inspirational Pooh (and friend) quotes:
We’ll be friends forever, won’t we Pooh? Even Longer”
“I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams we can be together all the time.”
“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think”
“Some people care too much. I think its called love.”
“If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.”
(I dedicate this to my mom!)
“Sometimes, the smallest things take the most room in your heart.”
“It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine”
“When life throws you a rainy day, play in the puddles”

I too love the famous words “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think,” said Christopher Robin to Winnie-the-Pooh.
