DuckTales: Remastered is an HD remake of Capcom’s original DuckTales video game released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
This original was one of my favorite games that I remember playing on the NES back in the late 1980’s. It was also one of the few games I finished to completion.
DuckTales follows the “Richest Duck in the World” and Donald Duck’s Uncle, Scrooge McDuck and his grandnephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, on a quest around the world to retrieve five legendary treasures. Travel from Duckburg to the Amazon, Transylvania, Africa, Himalayas and the Moon.
You play as Scrooge McDuck armed with his trusty cane which he can swing to break objects or pogo bounce off enemies. The pogo bounce helps him reach areas that are out of reach and hazardous to walk on. There are treasure chests and various jewels to collect throughout the game, like diamonds and rubies, to increase Scrooge’s fortune in his money bin.
The game plays like the original NES side-scrolling platformer with a couple tweaks to the pogo jump and added map screen. The game’s artwork has been beautifully enhanced and recreated with 3D backgrounds and layouts. The game levels have been extended and a training level has been added. The soundtrack is new, but reminiscent of the classic retro 8-bit games from that era of video games.
It has been a long time since I played the original NES version of DuckTales. One thing I do remember is that the game was challenging and not easy, much like this remastered version. Should you lose all your lives, you must replay the level from the beginning. This could get a little frustrating at times. The bosses in the boss levels seem tougher too. These things could deter some gamers from playing this game.
You can purchase unlockable items with the cash you collect. Which is a little strange to me, since Scrooge does not like to spend a cent. One of my favorite additions to the game is the ability to swim in Scrooge’s money bin. Something that used to dream about when I watched the DuckTales cartoon series.
DuckTales: Remastered features much of the surviving voice-over cast from the original DuckTales cartoon.
DuckTales: Remastered is available now on Wii U, PS3, PC and Xbox 360, Rated ESRB: E.
