If there is any finished film that knows anything about delays, its Josh Boone’s The New Mutants. The X-Men spinoff has seen its film’s release be pushed back numerous times in two years since it was supposed to be released, and with the ongoing pandemic, it’s likely that we will see it be pushed back again. Although, you wouldn’t think an epidemic is happening since The New Mutants is holding on to its August release date.
Yes, Boone, along with Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga participated in a Comic-Con@Home panel to talk about the upcoming X-Men spinoff that puts a horror-thriller spin on comic book film genre.
And while fans didn’t get the news that New Mutants would hit Disney+ or Hulu, Boone showed the film’s opening minutes. In it, we overhear about how there are two bears inside every person. These bears are forever locked in combat over the person’s soul, with one bear representing good and the other representing evil.
After that tiny it of exposition, we see a small snowy town engulfed in chaos. Here, our first mutant, Danielle Moonstar awakens to several explosions rocking her town. Her father then grabs her and takes her to a nearby forest. However, it appears that these explosions aren’t happening at random. There is a large unseen force that chases Moonstar. Unfortunately for her, she doesn’t see where she is running. After she takes a nasty fall, she knocks herself unconscious. And when she awakens, she finds herself, alone, handcuffed to a hospital bed.
The clip then transitions to a small sizzle reel of clips that we have seen in the trailer and some additional never before seen footage. One thing is for sure, bears will play a huge role in The New Mutants. It’s clear that the film intends to play on that horror angle as there are many tropes to the terrifying genre.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
“Twentieth Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents The New Mutants, an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
And it wouldn’t be Comic-Con without a few special releases. Below there is by special poster designed by Sienkiewicz, the celebrated artist who began illustrating the New Mutants graphic novels in 1984.
The New Mutants opens in theaters on August 28, 2020. At least we hope it does.
