One thing we have come to rely on while living abroad in a subtropical climate is games, movies, and apps for the iPad. On a normal day, we prefer to be outside soaking up the sunshine and getting some exercise. But on the days when we’re confined to the house due to torrential rain, it is definitely nice to have entertainment options!
On a recent trip to the movie store, my youngest son, Nate, picked out Peter Pan. Neither of my boys had seen it before, so we rented it. They proceeded to watch it on repeat for the next three days. Nate especially loved it. When I got the opportunity to try out a new Peter Pan app, I knew that Nate would be the perfect test subject.
I downloaded the app and saved it for a day when I knew I’d need it. In this case, it was about 20 minutes into Jack’s baseball practice. It was freezing cold out (which is about 60 degrees, here in Okinawa) and Nate was bored. We were bundled under a blanket and I told him that I had a new game for him. He was really excited when I told him it was a Peter Pan game.
Over the last week, this has become his go-to app. It tells the story of Peter Pan, complete with illustrated pages and a narrator. As the words are read, they are highlighted which helps Nate follow along as he pretends to read. Every few pages, there is an in-app activity. There are coloring pages, a musical flute to play, a matching game, and puzzles (Nate’s favorite). He loves to listen to the story and stop along the way to play the games.
I love that the app is customizable. I can have it read the story to Nate or turn off the narration so Jack can practice his reading on his own. There is also an option to record the story yourself. I did this and Nate was amazed to hear my voice reading the story to him!
As fans of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Wendy, Michael, John, and the Lost Boys, we definitely enjoy this app! I would recommend it to any Disney fan, especially those who also love Never Land!
The app costs $3.99 and is rated for ages 4+. For reference, Nate is 3 and loves it. It isn’t difficult and I think any young Peter Pan fan would be able to navigate the story fairly easily.
The Peter Pan: Disney Classics book app is available now for the iPhone and iPad on the App Store for $3.99.
