“WandaVision” has been an excellent study in the history of sitcoms and how to keep audience anticipation high for the past several weeks. Each episode visits a different era of the TV sitcom while also incorporating a larger mystery that exists within the MCU. So far we’ve seen nods to The Dick Van Dyke Show, “Betwitched,” “Rosanne,” and more recently “Malcom in the Middle.” Now Marvel Studios has released a new clip teasing its take on the “Modern Family” mocumentary sitcom, where Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) talks in front of the camera to air out her frustrations on accidently expanding the borders of the false world that she created.
Honestly, the mocumentary camera work is probably the best way for Wanda to acknowledge the events that are happening before her. Not only does it play into the sitcom themes but it also reveals another layer of truth about the series. By breaking the fourth wall, she confirms that she is not fully in control of what is happening, which is hinted at by her kids telling her that their game is freaking out. We are then taken to the living room where the two are playing a modern-day video game only to have it shift through the various previous generations before landing on a hand of uno cards. And just because she expanded the border, it means she has a lot more people to control, and given her history, this pocket of sitcom suburbia may not be as stable as it once was.
With Wanda coming clean about not being in full control, it confirms what we pretty much knew about the show: someone else is pulling the strings. And it won’t be too long before we find out who it is. Some are even frustrated that the real villain hasn’t been revealed. To which I say, that’s okay, but it keeps the interest and anticipation of the show at a high level, and is the only reason why we keep tuning in. Can you imagine if this was released all at once? We wouldn’t be talking about the show on a weekly basis.
One has to wonder how much longer Wanda can keep this façade up. Given what has happened in recent episodes, the walls are crumbling, and it is only a matter of time before she has to confront her grief head on. Because if she doesn’t SWORD will find a way to penetrate the barrier and do something about it. Could this be a way to introduce mutants into the MCU? Maybe this is a way to introduce Ms. Marvel, considering that this is taking place in New Jersey. We will just have to tune in to find out.
