Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal is often an overlooked gem, mostly because the creatures were a departure from the childhood innocent creations fans and critics were accustomed to seeing from Henson. But the film eventually became a cult classic, and fans have been wondering if they would ever see that world ever again.
Now the beloved classic is making its return to Netflix for an all-new 10 episode prequel series called The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance. The series takes place many years before the events of the film. Set in the world of Thra, three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.
Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk) will executive produce the series and direct. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will be a Netflix original series produced by The Jim Henson Company and executive produced by Letterier, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Longtime Henson collaborator Rita Peruggi will serve as producer and Henson’s Blanca Lista will serve as a co-executive producer.
The series will be shot this Fall in the U.K. and will bring back the magic of the first through the use of practical effects and feature an ensemble of fantastical, state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™ and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer.
No word yet on when Netflix will release The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance.
