Future Flash is about a girl, Elaine (“Laney”), who can see the future when she touches someone. A new kid came to her school, Lyle, and she sees a terrible “future flash” when she touches him. She saw a scene of them in a really bad fire, and the story continues as Laney is trying to prevent her future flash from coming true. This isn’t as easy as it may seem, as there is a boy, Axel, who likes to set action figures on fire. Laney also tries to befriend Lyle in an effort to keep him safe from fires. But Lyle resists the friendship because he thinks Laney is weird for saying she is trying to protect him when he thinks he is perfectly safe. Why does Laney have this future flash power? You won’t find out until the end of the book.
What didn’t you like about the book?
Kieran: I didn’t like when Lyle was getting beaten up, and Laney knew about it. Lyle was bullied a lot at his new school. She told Lyle that she wanted to tell adults, but he wanted to keep it a secret. I thought Laney should tell someone – She kept saying “I’m going to tell someone, I mean it”, but she never did. That bothered me.
Would you recommend this book to others and why?
K: I would recommend this book to others because it kind of has to do with magic, but it’s a cool different kind of magic. It’s not something she can do when she decides to, it just happens at random times. Sometimes it’s the first time she touches someone, or it may happen at other unexpected times. I was really into this book and finished it two days!
What do you think is a life lesson from this book?
K: Don’t judge something before you get to know it.
