Sports dramas love their fall from grace coaches for finding themselves rediscovering their love of the game in the most unexpected places. Though the formula for it hasn’t changed, it doesn’t make it any less of a feel-good story, especially when these coaches start to connect and make a difference in his players’ lives. Such is the case for “Big Shot,” starring John Stamos.
Disney+ has dropped the first trailer for the new 10-episode series that sees Stamos as an ousted NCAA basketball coach who finds his chance for redemption at an elite private school. Though his “my way or the highway” methods don’t click with the players, he comes to find out that he needs to change his coaching style to be more empathetic and vulnerable. By doing so, he comes to find out these kids need more than just a coach. They need someone to prepare them for the future beyond basketball.
Yup, all the familiar sports drama tropes are there. A contentious introduction, players considering rebelling, and a coach’s last chance may be the source of all the drama. But don’t worry about it being such a heavy drama, as there will also be where we get to see the emotional payoff when the coach finally connects with his players. And let’s not forget how exciting it is to watch sports – even if it is dramatized.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for “Big Shot:”
“Big Shot” follows Coach Korn (John Stamos) who, after getting ousted from the NCAA, is given a chance for redemption with a coaching position at an elite private high school. He soon learns that the teenage players require empathy and vulnerability — foreign concepts for the stoic coach. By learning how to connect with his players, Marvyn starts to grow into the person he’s always hoped to be. The girls learn to take themselves more seriously, finding their footing both on and off the court.
“Big Shot” also stars Jessalyn Gilsig, Yvette Nicole Brown, Richard Robichaux and features a talented group of young actors including Sophia Mitri Schloss, Nell Verlaque, Tiana Le, Monique Green, Tisha Custodio and Cricket Wampler.
“Big Shot” is produced by ABC Signature, a part of Disney Television Studios. The series was created and Executive Produced by David E. Kelley, Dean Lorey, and Brad Garrett; Bill D’Elia also serves as Executive Producer.
The first episode of “Big Shot” is scheduled to debut on April 16, 2021, exclusively on Disney+.
