The back to school transition can be rough. Summertime means a looser schedule with later bedtimes, lazy mornings and long days filled will family activities.
We are two weeks out from the first-day of school and we’re starting to switch gears. This year is a bittersweet transition for my 8-year-old. She’s moving to a new school and understandably she’s nervous about her first day. Who could blame her? “What if I can’t find anything? What If I don’t make any friends?” But along with the jitters we are just as excited for her to be exposed to new opportunities. To make the transition smoother, we’re getting her back on a bedtime routine, making sure she’s eating healthy foods and offering her favorite juices (she seems to be going through growth spurts!). Plus to give her a confidence boost we’ve let her pick out her some new clothes for her wardrobe.
Parent usually feel the transition as well! What do I dread the most? Carpool? Making new friends with the Parents? Nope, school lunches. Dun-dun-dun! My meals never look like the ones on Pinterest. After careful thought, there’s no reason why I can’t offer her a variety of fun, tasty and healthy lunches (it doesn’t have to be Pinterest picture perfect). My plan is to have a plan! Advanced meal planning will save me time in the morning and wondering what to make that day (I usually wind up making a PB&J). We pack her reusable water bottle with her lunch and I’ll pack her a juice a few days of week. She likes Juicy Juice Splashers in Fruit Punch flavor. Splashers are 50% less sugar (10g) and are only sweetened with fruit juice. Plus, kids are getting their daily dose of Vitamin C. Juicy Juice Splashers are perfect for school lunches, birthday parties and road trips.
Another transition will be homework. Homework wasn’t a part of her time at her last school so we’ll have to manage our time after school. I am a firm believer of letting kids be kids and not overloading them with ”busy work”.
Mornings should be stress free and mellow. Laying out clothes the night before should help save time in addition to meal planning. With an exciting curriculum (she will be taking cooking and gardening classes!), a healthy diet, physical education and enough play time, this year should be a successful one for my daughter.
What steps do you take to help your kid’s transition from summer to school?
