Plainly said, we are a dog family. We got Kaycee in the summer of 2006, before we had kids, and were excited to start our “family”. Little did we know… two weeks later, I would find out that I was pregnant with our first baby, Jack, and our family would grow a little sooner than we thought.
Six years later and I’m proud to say she is the perfect dog for my boys. She has more patience than I do most days, enduring tail and ear pulling, fingers being shoved into her eyes, and being used as a step stool. She is playful, sweet, patient to no end, and loves each and every member of our family (and everyone else she meets) with all her heart. That being said, she is also mischievous, obsessed with her Kong toy, and adorably naïve.
Every time we watch the movie “Up”, we find ourselves in hysterics over the similarities between our Kaycee and “Dug”. It has become standard in our house to talk to her in Dug’s voice. Lately, we have had a large crane that comes into our yard after almost every rain and Kaycee sits at the back door and stares at it, fascinated. Of course, this has led to us narrating Kaycee’s thoughts in Dug’s voice – “Where is the bird? I am looking for the bird. Please be my prisoner. Please, please, please!” (Yes, we’re a little weird in this household. But we have fun!)

Recently, we were given the opportunity to try out an app for the iPad called “Up: My Name is Dug”. So, of course, we were excited to try it out! The app is essentially an interactive storybook. There are two modes that allow you to either have the story read to you or for you to read it yourself. The story revolves around Dug and his search for “the bird” before he meets Mr. Fredricksen and Russell.
Jack loved the app! He liked how he was able to tap on different parts of each page and discover hidden special effects. He also liked that the story was right at his reading level. He is in kindergarten and just learning how to read. The story was easy enough for him to read on his own, but challenging enough that I heard him sounding out words. As for me, I love anything that gets him excited to read on his own and I also loved that the original voice from the movie narrates the book! All in all, it’s a very cute story and if you’re a fan of “Up” or Dug, you are sure to like it!
