Universal Studio’s The Secret Life of Pets gives us insight on what pets really do at home when we leave for the day. Max (Louis C.K.) is a terrier who lives a cool Manhattan lifestyle with his loyal human roommate until Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a rescued mutt, turns up. Three’s definitely a crowd and Max was instantly threatened by his new “brother”. While trying to avoid Duke, Max spends his days hanging with his neighbors or at the dog park with a distracted dog walker. Things go wrong when Max pushes Duke to the limit and takes him for a walk through the alleys of Manhattan. That’s when Duke and Max come across a gang of stray cats lead by a cute villain- bunny named Snowball who seeks revenge on humans!
I’m a sucker for a movie featuring woman’s best friend! My daughter and I were excited to see The Secret Life of Pets after seeing trailers featuring a giant head-banging poodle! We truly enjoyed this really funny film! Snowball (Kevin Hart) is a raging bunny who is ready and wiling to kick everyone’s butt!
As a human living with my own two dogs, I have learned that taking care of a pet is a privilege as well as a huge responsibility. My two crazy dogs have unique personalities and totally have me wrapped around their sweet little paws. But what they offer in return for being spoiled is their unconditional love.
The Secret Life of Pets got me thinking about setting up a secret “nanny” cam (not that it has to be secret, the dogs wouldn’t know that they were being taped!) to catch my female dog Sable in the act. She has separation anxiety and likes to cause mischief. One day, I came home to her greeting me at the front door. How is that possible when I locked her in the bathroom? Maybe you guessed, but this 10lb dog chewed and scraped right through door. She’s knocked over large trash barrels to empty it’s contents all over my kitchen floor. I’ve caught her in the act but it would be interesting to see what led up to the destruction!
Max and Duke’s introduction in the film reminded me of my two dogs. My husband and I searched for a dog to keep our Yorkie Nigel company. As soon as we rescued Sable, she wound up pushing Nigel around and has ever since. She’s definitely the alpha dog who is constantly kicking him out of his dog bed. I’m pretty sure Nigel still hasn’t forgiven me for bringing Sable home!
The Secret Life of Pets is in theaters now. See it this summer for a fun, family night out. The movie is about friendship and loyalty- two traits that my dogs have always shown my family. The animators also did a nice job recreating the NYC cityscape and giving us a glimpse of owners and their beloved pets beyond the fire escapes.
Make sure to arrive early for the funny short, Mower Minions!

We just saw this movie over the weekend and it was great! I thought it was so cute, especially the little chihuahua and the bunny that lived in the sewers. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again.

We went to see it, and we reviewed it too. My dog got to go with us to the drive in movies. Love this!
I wish I could bring my dog to the screenings!! What a fun idea!
