Netflix has released the newest trailer for The Old Guard. The actioner, starring Charlize Theron, is a film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández. In it, we see Nile (KiKi Layne), who is recruited to join a group of mercenaries, led by Andy (Theron), who are all centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves. But their way of life is now threatened when discover someone is onto their secret.
Given that we are still under a pandemic, and that there are no new summer blockbusters to see in a theater, something like The Old Guard is nice to fill that emptiness. And to be honest, it looks good enough to be in an actual theater. Luckily, it will be available on Netflix. So there’s no need to wait.
Though, I sometimes worry that these trailers reveal a bit too much of the film. We get a sense of the story and the characters, some of whom have lived since the crusades. The extent of their abilities is also explained in the trailer. While that is great, and the action makes it look like it will be a lot of fun, there are times where it seems like less would have been more.
But it should be interesting to see these characters’ long backstory. After all, they have been fighting since the Crusades, so there is bound to be a lot of history between them, and how their experiences shaped them to be the mercenaries that they are now.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for The Old Guard:
Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission, and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (LOVE & BASKETBALL, BEYOND THE LIGHTS), THE OLD GUARD is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.
The Old Guard also stars Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, with Matthias Schoenaerts and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball), The Old Guard makes its streaming debut exclusively on Netflix on July 10, 2020.
