Disney’s “Brave” is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands where the film’s headstrong protagonist, Merida, is forced to discover the meaning of true bravery. Merida is adventurous and defies her mother, the Queen, wishes for her to marry. Things go awry once Merida runs away and meets a wood carving witch.
We received the Wii version to test out. The video game allows single players, co-op or Bear modes for fans/gamers. The game’s storyline picks up right after the Queen has been turned into a bear. Explore the colorful Scottish country side in eight different levels. Difficulty ranges from easy (great for beginning gamers) to “brave”. As the brave Merida (using both the remote and nunchuck), players can destroy flowers, fight off monsters and creatures . This destruction and conquering allows Merida to collect gold coins to upgrade her tools. There are times when players can also take control of the Queen (in bear form) in some battles.
I do wish that players could change views or zoom into the characters like in the video game Epic Mickey. Occasionally Merida seemed to get lost in the environment. I’m glad that the game occasionally takes breaks from combat mode and offers cute puzzles. My daughter, like most young children, loves puzzles. She used her problem-solving skills and had a blast once she figured out how to maneuver the bear-cub brothers around.
This game is rated Everyone 10+. My family found this to be a fun cooperative game and easy enough for kids under 10 to play. I’ve played along side with my daughter who is five and she was able to figure out controls and has been practicing her “archery skills”. There is video game violence but no blood or gore which I think is appropriate for younger audiences. The game is entertaining and can be enjoyed even if you’re not familiar with the Disney Pixar movie.
