The Oscar nominations were announced early this morning and Joker leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor – Joaquin Phoenix. Meanwhile 1917, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, and The Irishman scored 10nominations, followed six nominations for Little Women, JojoRabbit, Marriage Story, Parasite with six.
While some of our favorites like Jojo Rabbit, Parasite, and Little Women are nominated, it is a little disappointing to see the lack of color in all of the acting categories. Despite the increased diversity within the Academy, there is only one person of color to be nominated. Jennifer Lopez’s snub in the Supporting Actress category seems unacceptable, especially after she got a huge amount of praise for her performance in Hustlers. Song Kang Ho’s snub is also difficult to accept when you look at who else was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The Farewell is nowhere to be seen in any of the categories like Best Picture, Best Director for Lulu Wang, Best Actress for Awkwafina, or Best Supporting Actress for Zhao Shuzhen. Additionally, Eddie Murphy’s performance in Dolemite Is My Name seems like an incredible comeback story that was overlooked. And it looks like no one even noticed that Lupita Nyong’o had to pull of opposing roles in Us. And let’s not forget Ana De Armas’srole in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out.
There is also a lack of female representation within the directing categories. No consideration for the aforementioned Wang or Greta Gerwig.
