Pixar’s “Soul” still has plenty of fun left in the tank, even after it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The existential animated flick will have a brand new short released this weekend called “22 vs. Earth,” where we get to see what made 22 (Tina Fey) such a pessimistic soul who goes to great lengths to avoid being attached to a physical body on earth. And now Pixar has released a brand new clip. Check it out below.
I had wondered about the purpose of such a short and why Pixar would feel the need to tell 22’s story of how she became adamant about not going to earth. Well it seems that it’s not because she has that kind of personality, but is rooted in a sense of loneliness.
Now she will recruit five new souls, who she refers to as “blank slates,” to join her cause. But getting these five souls to follow orders proves to be more difficult than she originally thought, as they are mere infants parroting whatever she is saying. Though 22 believes that she is creating a movement, she will come to find out a “surprising revelation about the meaning of life.”
Here is the short film’s official synopsis:
Set before the events of Disney and Pixar’s Oscar®-winning feature film “Soul,” 22 refuses to go to Earth, enlisting a gang of 5 other new souls in her attempt at rebellion. However, as her cohorts’ activities lead to unexpected results, 22’s subversive plot may actually lead to a surprising revelation about the meaning of life.
Normally, these shorts would appear as a bonus feature on the home entertainment releases. However, a few of them have found their way onto Disney+. Either way, it gives us a chance to revisit and hear the sounds of a beautifully animated world.
22 vs. Earth arrives on Disney+ on April 30, 2021.
