Marvel has announced another television series based on another comic superhero team. The New Warriors will be Marvel Television’s second series, joining Cloak & Dagger, on Freeform. The 10-episode series is not set to air until 2018, but here is a look at the team roster of six young heroes:
• Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl)
– abilities: Acrobatic, strong, can fight, can talk to squirrels
Doreen is a totally empowered fangirl. She is a natural leader — confident and tough, but not innocent. Doreen is bouncy and energetic and her greatest quality is her optimism… She has faith in others and inspires people to believe in themselves. She also takes her pet squirrel, Tippy Toe, everywhere.
• Craig Hollis (Mister Immortal)
– abilities: Cannot die. Ever. Maybe. So he says.
The team troublemaker and lothario… Craig is kind of like “The Most Interesting Man Alive,” except he’s more cocky than confident and at times, charmingly grumpy. Although Craig’s superpower seems amazing, he hasn’t made use of it at all — he’s lazy and figures if he has all the time in the world to learn how to fight, what’s the rush?
• Dwayne Taylor (Night Thrasher)
– abilities: None
Dwayne is a local celebrity “hero” with his very own YouTube channel. Brilliant, strong, noble, and maybe a bit full of himself, Dwayne is a shameless self-promoter and entrepreneur. But he also deeply believes in justice — at least his version of it. Dwayne hides the fact that he comes from a really rich family because he’s afraid he’ll lose his street cred.
• Robbie Baldwin (Speedball)
– abilities: Can launch kinetic balls of energy
Robbie grew up watching Quinjets take off from Avengers Tower and loves the idea of being a hero. He’s an impulsive and immature people-pleaser with a misplaced sense of confidence. Although you would think throwing kinetic balls of energy would be awesome and effective – his are completely out of control.
• Zack Smith (Microbe)
– abilities: Can talk to germs
Zack is a shy hypochondriac whose ability nearly makes him a telepath — the germs tell him where you’ve been, what you ate and who you hung out with. It’s impossible to keep secrets around him. He’s a big sweet guy the team takes under their wing, and they help him find and grow his own confidence.
• Deborah Fields (Debrii)
– abilities: Low level telekinetic; trickster
Deborah is proud, funny and quick witted. Confidently out as a lesbian, Deborah has experienced deep loss in her personal life as a direct result of super “heroics.” She can take care of herself, or at least says she can. She’s the one who calls people on their BS and has no fear of putting her opinions out there.
No word on the casting of any of the characters as of yet, but Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) and Shannon Purser (Stranger Things) have expressed interest in playing the part of Squirrel Girl.
It seems the series will be more of a comedy than a straight action series with Squirrel Girl as the central character and leader, instead of Night Thrasher being the leader like the comics. Plus many of the characters on the team have personalities that are on the funny side. It will be aiming for a much younger audience with a younger cast.
This team is quite a bit different from the New Warriors I remember from the comic book series. They were loosely affiliated with the Avengers as a junior team, with a few of their members even becoming Avengers. Night Thrasher and Speedball are original members of the team; Microbe and Debrii were on the team during the devastating incident in Stamford, Connecticut that started the Civil War in the comics; Mister Immortal is a member of the less known Great Lakes Avengers; and Squirrel Girl has become a fan favorite, appearing in many different Marvel Comics and her own series. I’m not sure how or if this series will connect to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the other Marvel Television shows.
Freeform has recently released the trailer for Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger series. The trailer does give a little glimpse of what there series will be about, but has some of the origin and storyline from the comic. You can check it out below.
The first cast photo for both Marvel’s Runaways and Inhumans have been released. Think I am more excited about Runaways than Inhumans.
The Runaways look similar to their comic book counterparts in the photo.
Entertainment Weekly has posted the first image of The Royal Family of the Inhumans: Eme Ikwuakor (Gorgon), Ken Leung (Karnak), Anson Mount (Black Bolt), Serinda Swan (Medusa), Isabelle Cornish (Crystal) and Iwan Rheon (Maximus). The only other two characters: Triton and Lockjaw, the huge teleporting bulldog are not shown in the photo. The first two episodes of the series is supposed to debut in IMAX theaters before airing on ABC this fall. I’m still wondering how this series will tie into the Inhumans that are appearing in Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. or will this be set partly in space.
And finally…
The trailer for Marvel’s Defenders. The characters from Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist form this new show on Netflix, and it is about time. Elektra returns and looks like she will be fighting against them. Misty Knight, Colleen Wing and Stick make appearances and Sigourney Weaver as the villain Alexandra is revealed. Hopefully the action in this is better than Iron Fist. Check out the trailer below.
