You never know what kind of movie Mark Wahlberg is going to show up in. Whatever the role, there’s always an edge to it and The Gambler looks to be no exception. Wahlberg plays an English professor who is also a high-stakes gambler. He borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. He pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Academy Award® winner Jessica Lange) in his wake. When did Jessica Lange get to be old enough to play Mark Wahlberg’s mother?! She looks fantastic though. There’s danger, fear, glitz, deceit and the potential for love and redemption. Sounds like the ingredients for a good flick, just not for the kids. The film also stars John Goodman and Brie Larson.
The Gambler is rated R and opens in selected theaters on December 19.
