My daughter loves to help out in the kitchen, and I try to encourage her participation as much as possible. I was thrilled to receive some items from Kuhn-Rikon from their Kinderkitchen line of kid-safe and kid-friendly products. We received the Duck Snippers, the Cockatiel Whisk, and the Crocodile Tongs for review. I couldn’t find the information on the website or packaging regarding the cleaning, so I washed them on the top rack of the dishwasher and there was no damage to any of the products.
Duck Snippers
The Duck Snippers kitchen shears were tested out on strawberries and bananas. My daughter had a great time slicing up her afternoon snack, but the shears don’t open quite enough to cut them in one motion. The spring action featured in the snippers did make it easy for her to cut each part, though. The shears don’t seem so sharp where I had to worry about her cutting herself, but I’d recommend staying close since they are scissors, after all.
The website says they won’t cut little fingers, so I think its great she can learn kitchen safety without the risk of being injured in the process! I especially love the yellow beak that acts to keep the scissors covered while being stored—so cute! Suggested retail price $18.00.
Cockatiel Whisk
The Cockatiel Whisk was tested out on eggs and pancake batter. The whisk is actually a really good design and works well for me, but the handle and the overall
length (9 inches) was too difficult for my tot to successfully maneuver on her own. She couldn’t get much leverage to quickly swoop the whisk around. One of the ‘feathers’ of the whisk is purple (which the website says is “just for fun”), and the orange handle has a “beak” on it to prevent the hand from slipping. Suggested retail price $12.00.
Crocodile Tongs
The Crocodile Tongs were the easiest tool we received to review for Kieran to use. She had no problems picking up the blackberries and grapes out of the bowl and thought it was so fun. She says the “Crocodile likes to dive down to the pond (aka the bowl) and chomp the berries like this”, as she would demonstrate
the proper tong technique she was using.I like the ridges, as it makes for better gripping when Kieran would try to pick up anything. The size of the tongs are also appropriate for her. This item was the most scaled down to comfortably fit toddler hands. Suggested retail price $6.00.
