Since when is it too early to be talking about the most wonderful time of the year, especially when you are a Marvel fan. Disney has just dropped the first trailer to Hawkeye, which promises that “the best gifts come in a bow.” Get it? Because Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) uses a bow and arrow as his weapon? Well, that’s not all. The trailer also gives us our first look at Hailee Steinfield as Kate Bishop, a young vigilante who aspires to be like Hawkeye. And just to make this trailer gift even more special, it teases an Avengers musical.
The upcoming Disney+ series is loosely based on the Matt Fraction and David Aja comic storyline of the same name where Hawkeye reluctantly takes on a new protégé who has the same albeit unrefined bow and arrow skillset. What’s more, the overall tone of the trailer seems to hint at a more joyous and festive fare, and I am not talking about that because it is set during the holiday season.
In the trailer we get to see Hawkeye finally be happy by spending time with his family, who he lost during the blip. So he’s spending as much time with them as possible to make up for a lost time. This includes going with them to see an Avengers-themed musical called Rogers. Sadly it’s not called “Avengers: Turn Off The Dark.” And there’s Steinfeld effortlessly capturing that cheeky energy Kate Bishop has in the comics. It’s funny to watch Kate go learn about the dangers of trick arrows during a high-speed pursuit.
Shows like “WandaVision” and “Loki” have been excellent experimental series, while “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” have been straight-forward with a dash of political commentary, and “What If…?” is a nice distraction that explores those hypotheticals that doesn’t really concern itself with what is going on in the main MCU, but still can have some high-stakes.
But it looks like “Hawkeye” will have low-stakes as it is centered mainly on the titular hero trying to live a life of retirement, only to be drawn back in by mentoring a young Kate Bishop and dealing with the ghosts of his past. That latter part feels very Christmasy and Marvel-like.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for “Hawkeye:”
Disney+ and Marvel Studios invite you on an unexpected holiday getaway, unwrapping the official trailer and teaser poster for “Hawkeye,” a new series set in post-blip New York City. Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.
Hawkeye” also features Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez – she is also the adoptive daughter of Kingpin, so pay close attention to that. Helmed by Rhys Thomas and directing duo Bert and Bertie, “Hawkeye” debuts exclusively on Disney+ on November 24, 2021.
