We attended the West Coast premiere of Superhuman Body 3D: World of Medical Marvels at the California Science Center. This new film is narrated by Matthew McConaughey and produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films. This inspiring film takes viewers on an incredible journey through medical advancements and innovations that enable us to lead longer, healthier, and fulfilling lives.

The film features the touching stories of three individuals who will inspire and motivate you. Ty Duckette, who joined us at the screening, is living with an above-the-knee amputation and is on a journey of adaptation, discovering the support of others while also supporting those with disabilities overcome their challenges. Emily Whitehead, a teenager who battled leukemia from a young age, became the first child to undergo a revolutionary treatment called CAR T-cell therapy, which cured her. We also meet ICU nurse James Garrett, who opted for an artificial valve instead of invasive open-heart surgery to address his heart condition. Each story is compelling, and all reflect a shared courage to adapt and inspire others. During the Q&A, Shaun MacGillivray director and producer discussed the importance of selecting impactful participants, explaining, “That’s one of the most important elements in the film because it’s such a big part of the storytelling, you gotta find emotional characters that are really going to resonate with people, finding Ty was such a big deal, that was a lot of research. We knew we wanted to tell that story of CAR T-cell therapy and the idea of using your immune system to fight against cancer and that story of Dr. Carl June and Emily Whitehead we just thought was so powerful. They have to say yes and a lot of the time they do it because they are really interested in inspiring the next generation.”

The film also highlights the dedicated work of doctors, scientists, and bioengineers who are committed to overcoming the challenges faced by patients. With beautifully composed cinematography, music and stunning CGI sequences, the film is a work of art that conveys a heartfelt story. Shaun MacGillivray, shares what inspired him to make the film- “A lot of the documentaries are just kinda the news that is out there, a lot of it is negative, you don’t feel very good after you see it and so we love to make films that are hopeful, that are inspiring, and that people get excited about the feature. It is pretty exciting what’s happening, being with these scientists and these researchers who are at the cutting edge, who are dedicating their lives to help humanity, it is incredible!”
Superhuman Body 3D is truly amazing, and I recommend everyone to see it out when it opens to the public at the California Science Center on March 29th. After the film, you can enjoy a day exploring one of our favorite museums in Los Angeles, which is a perfect spot for families of all ages to both learn and have fun!
Admission to California Science Center is always free, and you can buy tickets for the IMAX movies either at the museum or online.
