Avengers: Endgame marks the end of a 22 film arc that told the stories of superheroes like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye aka Ronin (Jeremy Renner).
We may not know what fate has in store for Earth’ Mightiest Heroes, but we do know these actors have played these characters for the better part of the past decade. As such, the characters are much a part of their lives as the characters are a part of our lives. We’ve seen them at their best and at their worst. And despite their differences, they always do what is right.
ThatsItLA joined the Avengers: Endgame global press conference, where Evans and Downey Jr. looked back on some of their favorite and more hilarious moments from their careers playing as these superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For one thing, Avengers: Endgame will put an end to a year-long debate on Cap’s gruff facial hair. “I prefer bearded Cap,” Evans said when asked which Cap he preferred.
“I like Chris Evans, I like Chris Evans with a beard with prosthesis over it when Joss Whedon asked him to come do the tag for the first Avengers,” Downey Jr. joked.
The tag the Iron Man actor was referring to was the first one where the team had come together after defeating Loki in the first Avengers film at a local Schawarma shop. During the production of The Avengers, Evans was clean shaven, and the tag hadn’t been shot yet until after the press junket. It was during that time when Evans was in the middle of shooting Snowpiercer, where his character had a beard.
“I mean, truly, I was in the middle of shooting Snowpiercer. I couldn’t shave the beard,” Evans said. “They were like oh, it’s okay. We’ll do prosthetics.”
This clearly surprised Evans, who at the time, didn’t think it could be done. However, it proved to be a tiny issue.
“Chris walks onto set with his face, and he goes, ‘I don’t think it’s going to work Joss,’” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said.
“Snowpiercer. Was it worth it, buddy? Think about it,” Downey Jr. said.
“Yeah. I love Snowpiercer,” Evans said. “But yeah. You know. I just thought why not? I mean, we’re making Ruffalo green. We can’t just lose this. But we spent some hours in the chair and put prosthetics on it.”
Downey Jr. then talked about his favorite moment in Avengers: Endgame, where he said the lighting on Titan made him look “shredded.” But his true favorite moment didn’t happen on set, but off of it, when we got to see the film with a child who couldn’t go to a theater. “I saw it with him and his reaction really F’ed me up,” Downey Jr. said. “I think what a lot of us are looking forward to is like Kevin always says is that it’s a surprising delight experience with Avengers: Endgame. It’s one of those things where you go ‘Wow, I think we just made a pretty serious choice here.’
He added, “But I think audiences liked that. I think audiences are so smart and now so, they require to not be fed the same drivel as even 20 minutes ago. It’s like we need novelty. And I think that what the Russos and Kevin have been able to do that is provide that in spades.”
Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26, 2019.
