Star Wars fans have been aching to see a new film ever since the Skywalker Saga came to an end. And now, The Mandalorian and Grogu are embarking on a new adventure in a film to be directed by Jon Favreau.
Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni, this new chapter in the Mandalorian and Grogu’s journey will go into production in 2024.
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting,” Favreau shared.
Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, added, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”
To celebrate this announcment, Disney and Lucasfilm have released a piece of concept art that sees Din Darjin, aka the Mandalorian and Grogu aka Baby Yoda, leaping out of an exploding ship.
“The Mandalorian” was one of the first of new Star Wars live-action series to be released on Disney+ in 2019. Since then, it has become a global phenomenon and expanded the Star Wars universe in unimaginable ways to tell a self-contained story set in the Skywalker Saga.
Other shows based on fan-favorite characters also include “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and “Ahsoka.” These shows have helped either shape the Mandalorian’s interconnective story or expand on some of the fan-favorite characters. While the Star Wars streaming series have taken off, their film slate has seen better days as Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue Squadron” and Rian Johnson’s trilogy have fallen to the wayside.
Despite a few of those setbacks, Disney and Lucasfilm intend to continue to release more and more Star Wars content in the coming years. In addition to “The Mandalorian & Grogu” leading Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate, there are also films and shows in development. One includes a live-action film that centers on Rey (Daisy Ridley) training a new class of Jedi helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. James Mangold is also slated to direct a film, as is Dave Filoni, who is also currently developing “Ahsoka” Season 2. Oddly enough, Taika Waititi, who was tapped to direct his own Star Wars feature having directed one episode of the Mandalorian, has been left out of the press release. It’s unclear if that means anything, but we will keep you posted if there’s any news.
