Disney has released a new preview for Cruella, starring Oscar-winner Emma Stone, their forthcoming live-action adaptation of one of their animated classics. The film sees Stone as the titular Cruella de Vil, a young rebellious fashionista revolutionizing the London fashion scene with her punk rock looks and wicked sense of style. And the relationships she forges and the revelations that take place during the course of the film will cause Estella to become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella.
The devilish punk rock tone that director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) is clearly set by a contemporary cover of Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walking.” And amid all of the chaos and fire, it’s hard not to see how Cruella could be this Disney’s version of “Joker.” So we have that to look forward to. And honestly, that could be a large part of the film’s appeal. Not only do the costumes look great, but it looks like everyone is having a fun time.
And it wouldn’t be much of a film without some adversary. So, the young grifting fashionista looking to shake up the fashion industry will be pitted against Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly Haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
“Cruella” also stars Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong.
