The “Creed” film franchise lead by Michael B. Jordan playing Adonis Creed, the son of the boxing champion Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise, has grossed over a combined $375 million. But after spending the first two films in front of the camera, Jordan is now stepping into the role as a director for “Creed III.” And as the newly released trailer reveals, there is no outrunning your past.
What makes the “Creed “ franchise so special is that it’s a celebration of Black Culture and tells a powerful story of Black love through the lens of underdog sports. Of course, since this takes place within the Rocky mythology, there will be plenty of training montages, a collection of needle drops, and more brutal hits than one can take.
But “Creed III” will be the first film not to have Rocky in the picture. Considering how Rocky’s story ended in “Creed II” with the legendary cinematic boxer reconnecting with his son (Milo Ventimiglia), it only makes sense that Adonis gets to tell his story and make a name for himself by respectfully disconnecting from his trainer.
In “Creed III,” Adonis thrives as a boxer and a family man, being a loving husband to his wife, Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and caring father for his daughter Amara (Mila Kent-Davis), who was born deaf. But when Damian “Dame” Anderson (Jonathan Majors), a childhood friend, is released from prison, Adonis gives him the help he needs to get back on his feet. However, Damian wants to hold Adonis accountable for everything that has gone wrong in his life and is determined to settle the score the only way they know how, in the boxing ring.
Wood Harris, Florian Munteanu, and Phylicia Rashad also star.
“Creed III” hits theaters on March 3, 2023.
