Marvel Studios has released the newest trailer for “Daredevil: Born Again.” As the title suggests, it’s the return of the eponymous blind hero who works as a lawyer for the underprivileged by day and moonlights as a vigilante by night. And just like its comic book storyline, “Daredevil Born Again” the series brings a new but very familiar Daredevil to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The trailer declares “The Devil’s work is never done.” Based on what we see in it, that is very true as Matt and Kingpin reunite at a NYC diner, acknowledging their alter-egos and shady pasts. While Matt (Charlie Cox) has made a name for himself as a lawyer, with the help of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), Kingpin has become the mayor of New York City. Still, there are questions as to why Matt is so happy, as the conversation between the two suggests he’s hung up one of his many cowls. As for Kingpin’s political rise, Matt hints that he knows the mayor did not win legitimately.
While there are loose connections to the Netflix television series Matt Murdock and Kingpin had already been a part of the MCU long before “Daredevil: Born Again,” with the former making appearances in “She-Hulk” and “Echo,” and the latter joining the MCU in “Hawkeye” and “Echo.” However, there is no indication that any one of those characters from those series will appear.
We do know that Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle aka The Punisher, as they have a violent reunion with Frank pushing a bloodied Matt against a locker, and Matt kindly asking him to put the hatchet down.
Based on the footage alone, the show hasn’t lost its gritty tone. Between the bone-crunching, knuckles cracking, and blood splattering, it looks like the series lives up to its name.
The road to “Daredevil: Born Again” has been anything but smooth but Marvel Studios managed to make the series cross that important finish line. After its initial announcement in 2022, Marvel Studios decided to overhaul the series with a new creative direction and let go of its writing and directing teams. The first six of the 18 episodes that were filmed were also scrapped because Marvel felt that the filmed episodes weren’t working.
As such, they took a new approach to the television production and hired a more traditional staff. Additionally, Marvel Studios hired Dario Scardapane, who also worked on Netflix’s Daredevil spin-off series The Punisher, to be “Daredevil: Born Again’s” showrunner.
“Daredevil: Born Again” is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, with a nine-episode first season.
