These are pictures of my daughter and I at the red carpet premiere of the BFG (in theaters July 1)! We bonded while preparing for our fun night out together. We tried on dresses, shoes and accessories to complete a fun summer look. I can only imagine what the preparation is like for celebrities who come together to celebrate their latest movie. For me premieres are a chance to dress up (as a mom I don’t usually get to dress up), mingle with A-list celebrities and film makers as well as friends. I love getting lost in these Hollywood moments!
Every premiere is a unique experience with environments to match the style of the movie. The BFG event had a simple design with understated treescapes behind over-sized props set up for the perfect photo-op.
Roald Dahl is one of my daughter’s favorite author’s. She was no stranger to BFG when we learned of the film. The BFG is the story of a gentle giant (the runt of Giant Country) with a magical job- he catches dreams from a mystical forest then journeys to England where he blows those dreams into the houses of sleeping children. Not only is the BFG (voiced by Mark Rylance) different in the size from the other giants, he also has a different diet. The other giants eat children. BFG eats gross veggies known as Snozzcumbers which he washes down with a green fizzy drink called Frobscottle.
The BFG meets (or should I say takes) a little orphan girl named Sophie from an orphanage who quickly becomes his friend. The two seem to have a big brother-sister relationship as he protects her from the human ‘bean’ eating giants. They both decide that enough is enough and that something needs to be done about the other giants. BFG and Sophie come up with a plan to stop them with the help of the Queen of England.
The BFG red carpet held massive props that are found in the film like The BFG’s bag, a street lamp, lab bottle and a British red telephone box. A cool life sized BFG backdrop created a beautiful princess scene for my daughter.
The talk of the night was definitely the film’s director, Steven Spielberg. I managed to get a photo with him! What was meeting the one-and-only-icnoic director/writer of classic films such as E.T., The Goonies, Jurassic Park like? It was surreal! Honestly, I was speechless!! He graciously posed for a selfie with me and Elia Garrison. He looked cavalier in a suit coat, gray tie, loose collar, khaki’s and sneakers. Loved it!
Other stars that we met that night were Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey) who stars as The Queen in the film and Jemaine Clement the mean giant named Fleshlumpeater. We had a funny moment when he introduced himself to my daughter as the mean giant who likes to eat children- ha! She was a little hesitant with her greetings with that comment! The highlight of my daughter’s night was definitely meeting Ruby Barnhill who plays the lovely Sophie.
