Like-it-or-not, it’s back to school time! I usually wait to the last minute to tackle back to school shopping for a couple of reasons- One, I like to drag out summer for as long as possible. Two, the best deals usually happen right before school. This year we celebrated the back to school season with the Shops at Montebello. They held a fantastic fashion show, showcasing awesome retailers, who gave shopper’s tips on the trends for this coming year.
My daughter is entering 4th grade and this year is an especially exciting (and scary) year for her. She’s going to a new school! So to help her ease into a huge transition I let her pick out her clothes this year. She’s full of awesomeness and the right outfit can boost her confidence!
Representatives from Macy’s, Forever 21, Old Navy and Steve Madden told us what was hot this Fall season. Look for pieces that can be layered and denim and leather jackets are great items to have in a student’s wardrobe. Colors this season are olive green, burgundy and other staple Fall colors. Dresses paired with boots are trendy this season and jeggings never seem to go out of style. We seem to have a collection of solid and printed jeggings every school year. As far as shoes go, loafers and combat boots are fashionable this season. And skinny jeans are hip for guys. All of the reps stressed being yourself and just because something is in style doesn’t mean you can’t try something new.
We hit our favorite stores armed with our tips from the experts. My daughter and I both love the styles in the girl’s department at Forever 21. We picked up this fitted kit, black and floral top, and red skirt. The top looks great with just about everything like shorts, jeggings or under a cute blazer. So, we didn’t exactly save this outfit for school. She’s already worn it to a red carpet premiere and on a getaway to San Diego!
I love this Minnie and Mickey sweatshirt. It doesn’t usually get cold here in Southern California but the mornings can be crisp during our “winter” months. The prices at Forever 21 are right on point and the styles are age appropriate and so cute!
A new backpack is a must every year. My daughter picked out this floral backpack from Old Navy. It was on sale for $12! Mesh side pockets makes storing her water bottle easy.
We picked up this rocking “Rebel Rebel” shirt in honor of David Bowie. My girl looks pretty in pink and she’s a bit of a rebel too!
Shoes are a must! It was love at first site when she set her eyes on these Chuck Taylor’s. They are pink, sporty and on sale at JC Penney’s! Score! We liked the boots on display but unfortunately they were out of her size. JCPenney’s also has a wonderful Disney collection of backpacks!
Shopping together was a fun bonding experience. I want her to feel independent and strong when she starts school. Clothes don’t make a kid who they are but they can help boost their self-esteem when you look and feel good.
Do you have everything you need to start the year off with a bang? Well, families can get in the back-to-school spirit on August 20 at The Shops at Montebello’s Back to School Kidgits event with arts and crafts, a face painter and balloon artist! Kidgits memberships are free and all members who show up to the event will receive a Disney Stitch “Tsum Tsum” plush pencil case (while supplies last).
We have a special giveaway for one lucky IT reader! We have a Vans backpack for you with some back to school goodies and Starbucks gift cards. Mom and dad might need a caffeine boost on the first day of school!

I try to shop during sales & the tax-free holiday.
I shop early to beat the crowds and before things are picked over. I decide on a budget and stick to it.
that we always get the morning clothes and lunches packed the night before,so all we have to do the next morning is grab and go
I like to take my 2 granddaughters (sisters) for back-to-school shopping several weeks before school starts to avoid the crowds of last minute shoppers. It also lets us have a wide variety of choices.
Do your back to school shopping sans kid! Lol
My tip is to search the weekly ads before shopping.
My number one tip is to plan your route! Make your list for each store and the order your going to shop.
Shop early!
You can get great deals online too!
My tip is to start early!
Shop early so you don’t have a big bill right before you go back to school.
These are super cute!
shop online to avoid the crowds.
Have a clear idea of what your child already has so you can buy things to work into his/her preexisting wardrobe.
I stock up on things we will need throughout the school year as well, so that I don’t pay full price mid year
I like to lay everything from backpacks to shoes out that is needed to get out the door. We pack up each night. Lunches are made each night.
My tip is find what the kids want and watch for sales to save you money
