Today is Star Wars: Celebration, and fans can expect to see a lot of teases of the future of a galaxy far far away. And one of those teases was for “Andor.” The upcoming series, set before the events of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” sees Diego Luna reprise his role as Cassian Andor, a young rebel spy who’s committed to bringing down the Galactic Empire by any means necessary.
Since this is a prequel series, we know what fate befalls on our jaded spy. The series seems to be leaning toward of its spy influences, which is what made Rogue One so distinguished. What’s more, the series takes a look are more of the darker side of the rebellion, and how some of the missions left their best rebels cynics who operate in a moral grey area. If anything, we know that will all change for him towards the end of “Rogue One.”
And the teaser only offers a small glimpse of the harsh realities of living under the thumb of the Galactic Empire. Other bits show us characters like Mon Mothma who intend to bring peace by political means. But we all know how that goes. Still, it will be interesting to see
“Andor” represents a refreshing change for the Star Wars franchise, which hasn’t seen a film or a streaming series, this dark. Typically, we see heroes glorified and honored as those who did the right thing. But now, we get to see how even fighting for a cause like the rebellion has its costs. So it should be interesting to see how far “Andor” is willing to go in terms of exploring that nihilism.
Tony Gilroy, who oversaw extensive reshoots on the Gareth Edwards-directed “Rogue On,” serves as head showrunner and writer for the first season of Andor. He is joined by Dan Gilroy (“Nightcrawler”), Beau Willimon (“House of Cards”), and Stephen Schiff (“The Americans”) who also serve as writers.
