“Deadpool & Wolverine” is one of the most anticipated superhero sequels of the year. While the film touts the long awaited reunion between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman portraying the superpowered frenemies, the two will likely find themselves upstage by a canine. And not just any dog, but Peggy, Britain’s ugliest dog. And Ryan Reynolds, who plays the Merc with the Mouth half of the superhero duo film, had some things to say about Peggy’s title and working with her on set.
In the film, Wade is living a quiet life as a used car salesman. Though nothing has been the same for our hero since he’s put down his guns and swords. But when the Time Variance Authority plucks him from his timeline and gives him the opportunity to be a hero, Wade jumps at the chance to put on those red spandex once more to prove that his talents aren’t for nothing and that he matters. So when he finds out that his Earth is on the verge of extinction, he travels to other multiverses to find a reluctant Wolverine to aid him on a mission that will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now that Disney has acquired Fox, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the chance to bridge the gap between the two superhero universes created by studio rights. And an Deadpool using the TVA’s multiversal travel device as a means to search for a Wolverine that could aid him in saving his own means that we will see multiple Deadpools as well. Including one that sees Deadpool as a Dogpool – as Reynolds puts it.
ThatsItLA joined their fellow journalists for the “Deadpool & Wolverine” virtual press conference where Reynolds talked about his onset chemistry between himself as Peggy. When asked if Peggy could talk, which actor would she prefer to work with, Reynolds made it clear that it was him. “There is a sequence in the film where Peggy and I, well – she explores my mouth using only her leathery, leathery tongue, which honestly looks like a Slim Jim commercial with Randy Macho Man Savage snapping off somewhere.”
“There is a close up of Peggy, because people have asked me how we did the digital effect of her tongue,” director Shawn Levy chimed. “Like the rest of this, we really relied on practical and real effects, and Peggy’s tongue might be the most 100%.”
Reynolds went on to talk about Peggy’s professionalism and how
Peggy is incredible. Peggy went really from zero to hero on this movie. I’m not kidding,” Reynolds said. “I mean, Peggy won the UK’s Ugliest Dog competition, which, frankly, I think, is a cruel contest. I mean, they’re very kind to the dogs, but Peggy is real, a real testament. Wade, my character, Wade Wilson falls in love with Peggy because Peggy is the sort of dog version of me. An outcast. Doesn’t look right.”
“Jules and the training team behind this little girl really just stepped up and took her from, you know, just an absolute pain in the ass to the most wonderful actor in this entire film,” Reynolds said about Peggy’s training team. “I mean, genuine. What a treat. And she’s my kids are obsessed with Peggy.”
“A lot of people are obsessed with Peggy,” Levy chimed.
Then Reynolds went on to quip a few new onset names they had for Peggy as they were shooting “Deadpool & Wolveirne” and went as far as jokingly promoting the dog’s instagram account and how much Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had to pay for it. “Yeah, Mary Puppins, as we call her. Dogpool,” Reynolds said. “She has an Instagram account. If anyone’s curious @Dogpool, I’m sure Feige paid a lot of money for that hashtag worth it.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” opens in theaters on July 26, 2024.
