“Once a rebel. Always a rebel.” Disney has released the newest trailer for the highly anticipated live-action Star Wars series “Ahoska.” Rosario Dawson reprises her role as the title character, a former Jedi who left the Jedi Order to become a wanderer fighting against the evil Empire. Set after the events of the original trilogy, the series sees Ahoksa trying to stop Thrawn return as heir to the Empire.
Since War is inevitable in the Galaxy, Ahoksa and the other rebels are on constant alert to all actions from the Empire. As such, Sith Lords like Baylan (Ray Stevenson) believe that Thrawn is the key to helping the Empire rise from the ashes. On the other side of this, Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is trying to convince the republic to help her prevent another war. But it seems like the Republic would rather sit around and do nothing about it. And we all know how that ends up for the galaxy.
This latest trailer establishes that this is more or less a continuation of the Rebels animated series created by Dave Filoni. So it only makes sense that the man who created Ahoksa and was a showrunner for “Rebels” is the showrunner for “Ahsoka.” And there are plenty of clues that give us an idea of where these characters are in their lives. Filoni looks to fill some of those gaps in between “The Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens,” with these new Star Wars streaming series like “The Mandalorian,” and “The Book of Boba Fett.”
With the impending threat of war from the Empire and the Sith, Ahoksa must recruit familiar rebel faces to her crew. In addition to Hera, there’s also Sabrine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), a Mandalorian warrior and former Imperial soldier. But it looks like their dynamics have changed since we last saw them. Based on the conversations that they have it, appears that Sabrine was Ahsoka’s apprentice, but somewhere along the way she did not complete her training. So the series should offer some answers as two what happened between the two and why their friendship is broken. We even get to see a little bit of what Sabrine is capbable of with a tease of a lightsaber duel between herself and Shin (Ivanna Sakhno).
Genevieve O’Reilly also returns as Mon Mothra, a Chancellor of the New Republic in Ahsoka.
The Ahoska trailer also gives us our first look at Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn. The actor reprises the role he voiced in “Rebels.” The last time we saw the high-ranking senior officer of the Galactic Empire, he was previously been taken into hyperspace by Ezra and the Purrgil.
“Ahsoka” debuts exclusively on Disney+ on August 23, 2023.
