My favorite moments in Disney’s Aladdin revolve around the Genie. He is my favorite character but there’s so much more to love about the film. Here are my top 8 reasons I love Aladdin including the blue man:
Genie of the lamp – He’s blue, he’s funny, he’s a shapeshifter (I love his impersonations) and quite loyal to his master. Deep down the Genie yearns for his freedom, “Ten thousand years will give you such a crick in the neck. ” But he will always put other people’s needs first. Genie has a ton of fun quotes in this film and he’s one of my all-time favorite Disney characters.
Robin Williams — The role of Genie was meant for Robin. Can you imagine anyone doing those skits? He didn’t have any restraints. He was creative and let his imagination go for this role. I miss Robin, he was a true artist.
Magic Carpet — One of my favorite songs is Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf. I think traveling via magic carpet is dreamy, romantic with the sky the limit. For the fun of it, where would your flying carpet take you to? Would you travel to far-off lands? I have a long bucket-list of travel destinations. On the top are Italy, Korea (I was born there and haven’t been back since I was 5), Vienna (I love classical music) and Alaska!
Wish fulfillment– Genie rules 1) I can’t kill anybody 2) I can’t make anybody fall in love with anybody else
3) I can’t bring people back from the dead, it’s not a pretty picture.
What would you wish for?
Animation– Simplicity at it’s best! The visuals are stunning and the timing couldn’t be better. The scenes are fast-paced and the animation creates rich humor.
Plus, animator Eric Goldberg nailed it when he created Genie. Genie’s design is simple, fluid and resembles Robin Williams. Beautiful!
Jasmine — “I am NOT a prize to be won!” Jasmine is strong-willed and refuses to uphold an old law that she must marry a prince before her 18th birthday. She wants to marry for love, not through an arrangement or because of an ancient law. She has guts and stands up to the men around her. I like that in a girl.
Jafar — is wicked! Greed really gets you nowhere! He wants to control the universe and can’t see past his obsession for power! He’s the guy that you love to hate and turns into a snake.
Songs — I’m a sucker for love songs. A Whole New World is so romantic! The lyrics are pretty and truly the ultimate song for Jasmine and Aladdin to express their love to each other. A Friend Like Me is also a great tune!
Ok, I didn’t add Aladdin to the list because he seems to be a habitual liar. I admire his persistence and determination to win over Jasmine but he’s pretty deceitful. I’m glad that he finally grows up (I’m not really sure how old these characters are the film but he seems younger than Jasmine) and finally believes in himself. He owns up to his lies and promises and eventually does the right thing.
Aladdin is out on Blu-ray. It looks rad and has awesome extras. Share what your favorite moments are from the film!
