Did you know that 50% of all children 2-18 years old eat less than one serving of fruit per day? According to the National Center for Health Statistics (in 2008), this is sadly the case. I am always on the lookout for quick and healthy snacks for my little ones. I try to pack my daughter’s lunch ahead with fresh fruits and vegetables, but sometimes, I’m scrambling in the morning to get us all out the door on time (we’ve all been there!). It’s nice to have a quick, healthy option to throw into her lunchbox when I’m short on time. Plum Organics and Revolution Foods sent us a sampling of their products to review, and I found some great options.
Revolution Foods is intended for toddlers and school-aged kids, and specializes in healthy organic lunchbox snacks. My daughter LOVES the Grammy Sammy (a yogurt-filled sandwich bar) and Jammy Sammy (a snackable sandwich bar). I admit it, I even tried a bite of the Honey Graham and Strawberry Yogurt Grammy Sammy myself (and, yes, it was delicious). It’s an easy, nutritious ‘treat’ that I can throw into her lunchbox. As a bonus, these are made with 100% whole grains, Organic yogurt or fruit spread, and contains no trans fats and no high fructose corn syrup.
Revolution Foods’ Mash-ups are a great alternative when fresh fruit isn’t available for my daughter’s lunchbox. We were sent the Grape and Strawberry Banana and my daughter loved them. I’m a fan of the pouch, too, as it keeps her hands (and my car) clean. I love that they don’t have to be refrigerated, so I can just throw them in my purse and am able to offer her a healthy on-the-go snack. And here’s a great idea I read on their website—freeze one and they’ll replace the ice pack in our kid’s lunchbox (plus they’ll have a tasty, cool treat!).
Plum Organics caters to infants and toddlers. I love the convenience of feeding my barely-1 year old from the pouch when a spoon isn’t handy. The first one I offered my son was a hit…he absolutely devoured the Just Pears. I wish I’d had a timer going, but I’d be surprised if it took more than 30 seconds. He pulled the pouch out of my hand and, literally, sucked them down! Based on that response, I would say he’s a fan, too. It’s great that should there be any leftovers (although, I have yet to experience this), the cap screws on so I can keep it in the cooler for later and don’t have to worry about any spilling out. I also love the ease of the Organic Super Puffs for my little guy to self feed while I get his main meal on the table. Each one is a blend of a fruit and veggie (the real stuff—no artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners) and are also made with whole grains. My little guy eats them up, but not without the help of his big sis! They’re reasonably priced at $2.99.
