Wear IT: Cutie Hoots Custom Tee Shirts for Kids

Lately my four year old daughter has been obsessed with all things mermaid — most likely fueled by a summer trip to the ocean. Since I’ve been tiring a bit of princesses, I’ve wholeheartedly ‘enabled’ the mermaid obsession. So I jumped at the opportunity to order her a mermaid tee shirt by Cutie Hoots.

Cutie Hoots, a company named for one mom’s love of owls and her three kids all under the age of five, is the creative endeavor of Denise Poole. She personally sketches, designs the patterns and sews each appliqued tee shirt. We selected a pink tee with a fair-skinned, blond mermaid applique.

The shirt is adorable. I ordered a size 5 and the 100-percent cotton short-sleeve tee fits my four foot, 36 pound little girl well. It’s a little long in the body which I prefer to the shorter, hip grazing style of shirts, especially when worn with leggings. The fabric is super soft and has performed well in its five wash and dry cycles.

The custom mermaid applique is a work of art. The fabric chosen for the mermaid’s hair is a small quilting-fabric style design that gives the hair a bit of a two dimensional quality. Our little mermaid wears a purple bathing suit top and sports a coordinating purple starfish in her flowing golden hair.

I’ve noticed extra glances on the sidewalks when my daughter wears her new shirt. I think other moms may be on the lookout for cute, unique clothes that don’t sport a logo or branded character.

We’re still deciding on a name for our mermaid, but it’s fair to say that the tee shirt is a hit and one of our most requested items of clothing.
