Our house is a fan of all things Disney, so when my girls had the chance to check out Geek Charming on DVD, I was sure it was going to be love at first sight! Plus, the DVD includes ten episodes of Shake it Up – a favorite Disney Channel show at our house, so I was pretty sure this would end up in the win column.

Cast: Sarah Hyland (Modern Family), Matt Prokop (High School Musical 3), Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars)
Director: Jeffrey Hornaday
DVD Bonus: 10 episodes of the Disney Channel smash hit TV series “Shake It Up”
Synopsis: When Dylan Schoenfield (Sarah Hyland), Woodlands Academy’s top girl, accidentally drops her expensive “it” handbag into the mall fountain, she is surprised that film geek, Josh Rosen (Matt Prokop), retrieves it for her. In exchange for rescuing her bag, Dylan must agree to be the subject of Josh’s documentary film. Dylan hopes the film will help her campaign for Blossom Queen – she claims that winning is her only life goal. Josh plans to make a hard-hitting expose about popularity, but, as he gets to know Dylan, he learns that the real Dylan is much more interesting than the persona she’s created. At the last minute, Josh decides that his film should introduce this awesome girl to the world, but how will Dylan react when she sees it?
Our thoughts:
I’ve worked pretty hard at not exposing my girls to negative stereotypes when it comes to the television and movies they watch, and the books they read, so I was curious to see what they’d think about a movie that obviously had more actual high school drama to it than what they’re used to. I asked them if they thought there were any lessons that they learned, and was more than pleasantly surprised by their candid reactions to the characters and movie.
Emily, 11 years old: “People shouldn’t be so fast when they judge other people because you never know what they might be going through in their lives.”
Ellie, 9 years old: “People should be more honest, because it’s much nicer and nobody will get their feelings hurt.”
All in all, I’d have to say that those are pretty good lessons to learn in life, and I’m glad they were able to recognize these within the context of a movie. Does it mean that I’ll let them start watching whatever they want? No, but at least I know that they can see through the characters to find an underlying message that proves my mother was always right…it’s okay to date the cool guys, but marry the dorks, because they’re really the best kind of guy out there. Thanks, Mom! – Erin
