Decorating eggs on Easter has been a family tradition since I was a kid. My family and I get our craft on every spring and try to come up with different egg designs every year. This year STX Entertainment challenged us to make eggs that look like characters from their upcoming Uglydolls film. We did our best to create the imperfect versions of Moxy, Wage, Ugly Dog and OX as “eggtacular” ugly art.
Tips on creating colorful Uglydoll eggs:
I boil my eggs the night before so we have cooled eggs to work with in the morning.
I purchased PAAS cups that come with tablets. If you don’t have time to buy these cups then use a deep mug or something that will submerge the eggs.
Boil water and add one cup of the boiled water to each PAAS cup. I also added vinegar to help the color stick to the eggs. In addition to the color tablets, I added drops of food coloring to enhance the colors. Soak the eggs in their cups for 5 minutes. The color is bold and beautiful!
Let the eggs dry completely before decorating!
To create the characters from Uglydolls, I used googly eyes for Moxy, Wage, and OX and candy eyes for Ugly Dog. Food markers or paper cut outs worked the best for hair/extra features added to the eggs.
To complete our design we glued on the googly eyes, created eyelashes and smiles with the food markers. Turn the eggs sideways and use the Uglydolls movie poster for reference. I actually drew and cut out Ugly Dog’s smile out of colored paper. His pointy teeth were hard to create!
My daughter made Ox and I think he’s my favorite.
UGLYDOLLS – In Theaters May 3
Unconventionality rules in UGLYDOLLS, STXfilms’ new animated musical adventure starring the acting and singing voices of Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Janelle Monáe, Blake Shelton and Pitbull.
In the adorably different town of Uglyville, weird is celebrated, strange is special and beauty is embraced as more than simply meets the eye. Here, the free-spirited Moxy (Clarkson) and her UglyDoll friends live every day in a whirlwind of bliss, letting their freak flags fly in a celebration of life and its endless possibilities. In this all-new story, the UglyDolls will go on a journey beyond the comfortable borders of Uglyville. There, they will confront what it means to be different, struggle with their desire to be loved, and ultimately discover that you don’t have to be perfect to be amazing because who you truly are is what matters most.
The film is inspired by the unique and beloved global plush toy phenomenon launched in 2001 and features all new original songs from the cast of popstars.
