Amazon has released the first trailer for their serialized adaptation of “The Wheel of Time.” Based on Robert Jordan’s best selling books of the same name, the series stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, who embarks on a perilous journey with five men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, an all-powerful being who will either save or destroy humanity.
The logline alone sounds deep and full of stakes. Of course, this would not be Amazon’s first crack at adapting a sprawling novel for the streaming age. They’ve also put a lot of money into their “The Lord of the Rings” series, which is currently in the production phase. But more on that when the time comes. As for “The Wheel of Time,” Amazon is clearly jumping aboard that dragon train after HBO’s successful “Game of Thrones” series. But the fantasy genre hasn’t become dust in the wind just yet. It just needs to find the right creative artists to interpret the material. ANd hopefully, it has found that in executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for “The Wheel of Time:”
The Wheel of Time is one of the most popular and enduring fantasy series of all time, with more than 90 million books sold. Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.
“The Wheel of Time” also stars Josha Stradowski, alongside Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Álvaro Morte as Logain, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon, and Zoë Robins as Nynaeve.
