Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore’s The Walking Dead comic series had its near 16-year entire run in black and white. The monochromatic style was an homage to the great horror films set during a post-apocalyptic zombie-infested world. And now that world is about to be filled with color as Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment will re-release the series with newly, fully colored issues. It features the stunning work of the masterful Dave McCaig. Kirkman announced the colorization of the original Walking Dead Comics at Skybound Xpo, Skybound’s virtual pop-culture convention.
According to the press release, “this deluxe revival of the series will also feature a memorable array of variant covers—by such artists as David Finch, Tony Moore, Julian Totino Tedesco, and Arthur Adams—commemorating major character introductions and the series’ most memorable twists and turns. Each issue will include a new installment of “The Cutting Room Floor,” featuring Kirkman’s original handwritten plots along with commentary on abandoned storylines and plot points that may have changed along the way.”
The Walking Dead centered on Rick Grimes, a Kentucky deputy who is shot in the line of duty and awakens from a coma in a zombie apocalypse that has resulted in a state-wide quarantine. The comic series received numerous awards, such as the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series at San Diego Comic-Con International. AMC would adapt it into its two most popular dramas: one of the same name, and the other a spinoff titled Fear The Walking Dead. A third pending spinoff called The Walking Dead: World Beyond was scheduled to debut earlier this year but was halted due to the ongoing pandemic. There are also video games, webisodes, and novelizations. And let’s not forget the upcoming movie that will see the return of Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes.
