The theater resonated with the sounds of Kiss hit, “I Was Made For Loving You” as David Letich’s Fall Guy unfolded on screen. In the midst of heart-pounding action and faceless stunt doubles, a love story blossoms between Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), a seasoned stuntman, and Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt) a cinematographer on Tom Ryder’s (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) latest film. However, tragedy strikes, testing their relationship. The film not only delves into their romance but also pays tribute to the often overlooked heroes of the stunt community.
The narrative kicks off with tension between Tom Ryder and his stunt double, leading to a series of dramatic events. After a life-changing accident, Colt is forced to leave his stunt career behind and work as a valet. However, a tempting offer from heavy weight producer Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) pulls him back into the world of stunts, as he gets the opportunity to work alongside his ex-girlfriend Jody on her premiere film, “Metalstorm.”
Colt heads to Australia where secrets are revealed and Colt’s true intentions for returning to the stunt scene. The film dazzles with a whirlwind of thrilling stunts and action sequences, inspired by classic films like the Million Dollar Man and Miami Vice. While the pacing is commendable, some transitions between scenes may feel abrupt.
Despite the fantastic chemistry between Gosling and Blunt, their romantic connection felt lacking and at times felt more like a long sketch from SNL, and I was waiting for them to crack up with some of the cheesy scenes. However, I did enjoy Gosling’s quest for a cup of coffee due to his jet lag and his emotional moment while listening to Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well”. The humor felt very natural and well timed. Alma Milan (Stephanie Hsu) as the set assistant shined in one of the longer action sequences! Along with Winston Duke who plays Dan Tucker the stunt coordinator. I wish we had more screen time with them! Director David Leitch’s background as a stuntman elevated the film to new heights, showcasing his expertise in choreographing adrenaline-fueled sequences.
A standout moment for me was the climax where the storyline unfolded, revealing the unity of the stunt team. It was thrilling to witness the behind-the-scenes camaraderie, explosive jumps, and the focus on safety measures. The movie is filled with a spectacle of explosions, high-speed car chases reminiscent of “Fast and the Furious,” and even features a stunt dog. Every imaginable stunt is brought to life on screen, making it a thrilling cinematic experience.
Overall, The Fall Guy has all the makings of a summer blockbuster. If you’re in need of a break from superhero movies or just love action films, this one is for you. It was a blast to watch, even if it was a bit silly at times but maybe it was poking of itself in some ways. The stunts were incredible and unforgettable. Although Ryan Gosling didn’t do all of his stunts, the end credits do show him getting in on the action. I give The Fall Guy a thumbs up for its rocking soundtrack, fun twists and turns, and it gave me a newfound appreciation for stunt performers.
