My five-year-old daughter loves reading stories on my iPad. I search for story apps that are both educational and enjoyable for her. We were given the chance to review Sofia the First, a new Disney Storybook app. The Sofia the First Storybook app has quickly become Adeline’s favorite. The story is narrated by the original voices from Disney Jr’s Sofia the First show, which Adeline loved. Each page contains beautiful images which can be brought to life by the swipe of your child’s finger. The story of Sofia is sure to capture the heart of young children.
The story tells of Sofia who went from living a normal life with her single mom to becoming a princess, when her mom married a king (creating a fairy tale for all the single moms out there too!) The story shows how Sofia struggles with her new role as a princess. Royal balls and a perfect princess stepsister do not make things easy for the new Princess. With the help of a Classic Disney Princess, Sofia figures things out! I admit I was enthralled with the cute young princess and loved the way classic Disney characters made appearances!
The storybook app also includes a puppet theater where kids can choose characters, settings and props to create their very own virtual puppet show. As a preschool librarian, I have learned that puppet play helps promote literacy by stimulating and reinforcing language development. I tried to get a video of Adeline creating her very own puppet show but she was a little shy when I asked to tell her own story. Although after I left the room she had no problem recording her own story! I had fun watching and hearing her creations, which were saved on my iPad. For $4.99 on iTunes (available for iPhone and iPad) this app is a great deal for all that is included and a wonderful addition to your virtual library!
