Ever since he made his debut in the first “Iron Man” in 2008, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has been the glue that has bound the MCU together. Now, the enigmatic spy and former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is ready to lead “Secret Invasion,” a brand-new MCU espionage thriller set to debut exclusively on Disney+ later this year. And now Disney has released a brand new trailer of the series, which gives us a small look at seeing a Nick Fury in a way that we’ve never seen before.
Created by Kyle Bradstreet, we don’t know much about the plot or how much it will stay true to the spirit of the story arc. As of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Fury has been off-world, taking a nice vacation of sorts while letting the other heroes take care of things. But Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) needs him back on Earth, where a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls intends to invade Earth because they feel Fury has failed to deliver on his promises.
In a world where a Skrull can be anyone and everyone has an agenda, Fury has very few people he can rely on. Some even see his return to Earth as dangerous, while others say Fury is partially responsible for everything that has happened since he left Earth, which makes him one of the most wanted men on the planet. As such, this one war that he has to fight on his own, without the help of the Avengers. But that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing a few familiar faces like Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, and Don Cheadle also reprise their roles as Maria Hill, Everett Ross, and James Rhodes, respectively.
Despite his enigmatic personality, Nick Fury has always done the right thing even if it meant bending the rules a bit in his favor. It may not be perfect, and there are ramifications to his decisions, but he will do what it takes to protect the Earth. And “Secret Invasion” explores those decisions through the political lens while being set in the MCU. What’s more, not only does he have to contend with humans who don’t trust him because of his connections to the Avengers, but he also has to acknowledge that the Skrulls are starting to lose their faith in him and has since place themselves as humans in positions of power around the world.
The cast also includes Kingsley Ben-Adir as Graviks, the leader of a group of rebel Skrulls who has broken away from Talos’ faction, believing the best way to help their kind is to infiltrate Earth for the resources they need. He sets up his operation in a decommissioned radioactive site in Russia. Emilia Clarke plays G’iah, the daughter of Talos, who resents Fury because he’s been unable to deliver on any of his promises.
Olivia Colman is a human MI6 agent looking to protect England’s national security interests during the infiltration.
“Secret Invasion” debuts exclusively on Disney+ on June 21
